Why Does Man Need Salvation?

C.S. Lewis, Christian Reflections, Christianity and Culture: “The glory of God, and, as our only means to glorifying Him, the salvation of human souls, is the real business of life.”

Why does man need salvation?

Matthew 6:48- You are to be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect.”

Romans 3:10-12 – As it is written: “There is none righteous, no, not one; There is none who understands; There is none who seeks after God. They have all turned aside; They have together become unprofitable; There is non who does good, no, not one.”

Ezekiel 18:4 – The soul who sins will die.

James 4:17 – Therefore, o one who knows the right thing to do and does not do it, to him it is sin. (Sins of omission)

1 John 3:4 – Everyone who practices sin also practices lawlessness; and sin is lawlessness. (Sins of commission)

Habakkuk 1:13 – “Your eyes are too pure to look on evil, and you cannot tolerate wrong.”

John Piper, “The Holiness of God, Our Sin, and the Love of Jesus,” April 16, 1981:

All the evil in the world is an offense against the holiness of God and is preparing this world for a cataclysm of divine vindication. The zeal of God burns for the holiness of his great name.

“Now if God should call to us an account for the most inoffensive day that ever we passed over, what would become of us? “If though shouldest mark iniquities, O Lord, Who could stand?” Ps 103:3… So here we are “without strength”, altogether unable to come up to the obedience of the law of works… we may increase the debt but we cannot lessen it.” Thomas Manton (1620-1677) “Man and Sin.”

John 14:6 – I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

“You paid a debt you did not owe. I owed a debt I could not pay. And you have nailed it to Your cross. You have taken my sins away. Now I am alive in You. I have redemption through Your blood.”

Ephesians 1:7 – “In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace.”

For my pardon, this I see,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus;
For my cleansing this my plea,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

Nothing can for sin atone,

Nothing but the blood of Jesus;
Naught of good that I have done,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

Nothing but the Blood, Robert Lowry

Application/Our Response

When realizing our need for salvation, we should fall to our knees. For those of us who aren’t saved, we should fall to our knees in repentance. We need to cry out to God for forgiveness and accept his free gift. For those of us who have already done this and are experiencing a personal relationship with God, we should fall to our knees in praise. Our response should be like that of Robert Lowry when he penned:

This is all my hope and peace,

Nothing but the blood of Jesus;
This is all my righteousness,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

Glory! Glory! This I sing—

Nothing but the blood of Jesus,
All my praise for this I bring—
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.
