Authority of Scripture

Jesus Clearly Demonstrated His Belief in the Authority of Scriptures. Defend this Statement with Evidence.

Dr. David Livingston, Answers in Genesis:

“Jesus never belittled Scripture (as some modern critics do), or set it aside (as the Jewish leaders of His day had done with their Oral Traditions), or criticized it (although He criticized those who misused it), or contradicted it (although He rejected many interpretations of it), or opposed it (although He sometimes was free or interpretive with it), nor spoke in any way as ‘higher’ critics do of the Old Testament.”

We will be looking at evidence through the way Jesus displayed His authority in Scripture through the Four Gospels: 1) Matthew, 2) Mark, 3) Luke, and 4) John.

1) Matthew:

Matthew 19:4 – And He answered and said, “Have you not read that He who created them [man] from the beginning made them male and female.

Matthew 22:31-32 – But regarding the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was spoken to you by God: ‘I am the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob’?”

–He was quoting Exodus 3:6 – He [God] said also, “I am the God of your father, I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob.”

Matthew 24:15 – Therefore when you see the abomination of desolation which was spoken of through Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place…

2) Mark:

Mark 12:26 -But concerning the dead, that they rise, have you not read in the book of Moses, in the burning bush passage, how God spoke to him, saying, ‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’?[

Mark 7:6-10 – He answered and said to them, “Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written:
‘ This people honors Me with their lips,
But their heart is far from Me.
And in vain they worship Me,
Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’

For laying aside the commandment of God, you hold the tradition of men -the washing of pitchers and cups, and many other such things you do.”
He said to them, “All too well you reject the commandment of God, that you may keep your tradition. For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother’; and, ‘He who curses father or mother, let him be put to death.’

Mark12:24 – Jesus answered and said to them, “Are you not therefore mistaken, because you do not know the Scriptures nor the power of God?

3) Luke

Luke 16:29, 31 – Abraham said to him, ‘They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.’… But he said to him, ‘If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded though one rise from the dead.’”

Luke 4:17-21 – And He was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah. And when He had opened the book, He found the place where it was written:
“The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me,
Because He has anointed Me
To preach the gospel to the poor;
He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted,
To proclaim liberty to the captives
And recovery of sight to the blind,
To set at liberty those who are oppressed;
To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD.”

Then He closed the book, and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all who were in the synagogue were fixed on Him. And He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”

4) John

John 5:39 – You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me.

John 5:46 – For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me; for he wrote about Me. But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?”

Application:

Ephesians 6:17 – And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.

Dr. David Livingston, Answers in Genesis:

“There is considerable debate these days concerning the inerrancy (infallibility) of Scripture. The authority of God’s Word is the main issue. But, if one yields to the authority of Jesus Christ (Yeshua HaMashiach), he must, in turn, yield to Christ’s view of the Scripture itself. Anyone and everyone who claims to be a Christian (a believer under the authority of Christ) must hold to the same view He did!”
