What Role Does the Holy Spirit play in the believer’s life?

Tuesday, March 3rd, 2009

The role that the Holy Spirit plays in the life of the believer is immeasurable. He is the One that convicts first of sin, righteousness, and judgment. He is the One who wakens a dead heart to hear the message of truth, the Gospel of our salvation, and brings about the faith to believe. He is the One who seals us for the day of redemption. He is the One that fills us and empowers us to live a life that is pleasing to God. He encourages, exhorts, teaches, comforts, and guides the believer into all truth.

We are not as the Old Testament saint who only had specific times in his life where he was filled with the Holy Spirit. He lives within every believer throughout the lifetime of the believer.

The Holy Spirit is the primary Person in the counseling process. Jesus Christ now dwells in His church in the person of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is “another Counselor…the Spirit of truth.” He is specifically the same “kind” as Jesus. He is the advocate, the helper, and the intercessor. He is the source of truth who leads into all truth.

Since the Holy Spirit is the source of all holiness (Romans 1:4), the result of His work in the life of the believer is sanctification. The “fruit” of His work is just that: it is the result or evidence of His work. Since the role of the Holy Spirit in the life of the believer is to sanctify him, then the Holy Spirit is the most important Person in the counseling process. If a Christian were to counsel apart from the Holy Spirit and the Word of God, it is sin and cannot be called Christian Counseling.

The Holy Spirit is the one who regenerates and give faith to the believer (1 Corinthians 12:3) and it is He who enables the believer to understand and live according to God’s will as He reveals it in the Scriptures. It is only by “hearing” the Word of God that the Spirit of God uses counselors in His church today.
