How is the Bible different than other religious books?

Question: The Bible teaches that Christ is the savior, and has died for us to cleanse us of our sins, but, from a logical standpoint of someone who is thinking about the Christian faith, what reason have we to believe the Bible? Why is the Bible the word of God and not the Q’ran? Or the Torah? I understand that the Bible says it is the word of God in it’s own pages. If I wrote a book about a god that I believe in (that I completely made up), and wrote that that book was the word of the true God, how is it any less valid? How can a logically minded individual say that the Bible is the actual word of God and not the book I wrote?

Again, this is not meant to be spiteful. My mother is Catholic, and I was raised in that environment, and these are just things I’ve been thinking about for many years. I have not had a chance to discus them with anyone, as my mother dodges the questions, and any other religious leader I’ve spoken to only preaches to me about the reasons I’m going to suffer for all eternity, rather than attempting to help me.

What about miracles, prophecy, and tongues?

I am a hard-cessasionalist on the view of continuing revelation. Simply put, I believe the sign gifts (miracles, prophecy, and tongues) have ceased after the last apostle died. Until the 20th century, this was the primary position held throughout the history of the church. It was not until then that the Charismatic revival, as we know it, began.

What’s the relationship between infallibility and authority?

The doctrinal teaching of infallibility is that the Scriptures cannot fail in the areas of faith and practice. This term is often used synonymously with the term inerrancy. The Scriptures are not simply infallible but inerrant. They are true in all they teach. It records lies that were told (Abram and Sarai) and bad counsel that was given (Job’s friends). If it didn’t do that, it wouldn’t be inerrant. It is the final authority in all areas of faith and practice. Since it is from God who is true, it is without error and, therefore, infallible.

What does it mean that the Bible is inspired?

When the Bible speaks of being “inspired,” the term literally means “God-breathed.” We find the term in 2 Timothy 3:16a “All Scripture is inspired by God…” Inspiration is the act whereby God guided the writers of Scripture, giving them His words while fully utilizing the human element within man to produce the Scriptures.
